The city if Shanghai is one of the cities of the Peoples republic of China. It has the status of being the largest city of the country, as well as being ranked among the largest urban areas of the world with respect to the level of population. There are more than twenty million people who live in the metropolitan area of Shanghai. The city is positioned at the point where the Yangtze River opens, that is on the central eastern coast of China. The city has the status of being a province and is administered as a municipality.
Initially, Shanghai was a town of the textile and fishing industry. But because of its highly favorable location as a port, the city gained importance in the nineteenth century, and due to the Treaty of Nanking, which was signed in the year 1842, city was allowed to carry out foreign trade. In the 1930s, the city turned into an international business and finance center, as well as thriving as a hub of commerce between the west and the east. But all this growth and prosperity stopped after the year 1949 when the Communist took over and the foreign investment was stopped. In the year 1990, economic reforms were carried out and soon after that Shanghai has started to become successful again and there is intense financing as well as development being conducted, so much so that Shanghai got the status of being the largest port of the world in the year 2005.
Due to various historical landmarks including the Xintiandi and the Bund, the Pudong skyline which is highly modern and is also continuously expanding and includes the Oriental Pearl Tower, as well as the reputation which is the city has of being a multinational hub of design and culture, the city has turned into a major tourist destination.
