INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMUNE:
Milan is an ancient large city that has been a part of Italy since centuries. With a population of above 1.3 million it is one of the grand cities situated in the region of Lombardy. The city is inhabited by approximately 7.4 million people and is the fashion capital of the world. The river Lambro runs through the city surface whereas river Seveso and Olona run beneath the ground. Milanese has been renowned for their aesthetics and rule the fashion industry of the globe. Milan has a total area of 1,982 km² and is divided into nine zones for better governance. The city is located on the plain between river Olona and Seveso from where comes its Roman name of Mediolanum which means “in the midst of the plain”. The city has also been called Mailand by the Germans.
MILAN THROUGH THE AGES:
Milan has many tales associated with it and has been a part of many kingdom and dynasties. The journey of Milan can be traced by to 400 BC. After the Celtics the Romans claimed the plane of Milan and made it a capital of the Western Roman Kingdom. The Romans built large monuments that were representative of their cultural perspectives including Thermae Erculee and A Large Circus. Before the Romans it was part of the Byzantines, Visigoths, Huns, Ostrogoths and Germans. All these wars and subsequent conquests kept redefining the architectural and economic parameters of Milan.
In the 19th century Milan was one of Napoleon’s conquests and it was made the capital of Cisalpine Republic. After the French revolution ceased Milan was returned along with Lombardy and Veneto to the Austrians in 1815. The famous Mozart belongs to this age whose opera were acknowledged world wide and earned Italy its deserved stature amongst the culturally established countries. Milan then became a part of the UNIFIED ITALY and was the largest commercial city in the North of the country.
