The Portuguese Republic also called by natives as República Portuguesa lies in the southwest of Europe. It is situated on the Iberian Peninsula and is the last country included in the continent of Europe westwards. The neighbors of Portugal are Spain in the North as well as towards East. The country of Portugal also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Madeira and Azores. This region was inhabited in early days of man and there are evidences dating back Portugal to Lusitanians and Celtic tribes.

The romans also established their dominion over Portugal somewhere around 2 BC.

The lands of Portugal have changed many kings and kingdoms including the Germanic people called the Suebi and the Visigoths between the 5th and the 8th century BC. The Muslims also came and defeated the Christians before establishing their rule. The entire Iberian Peninsula was under the rule of the Muslim Moors at a point and time in history and this was achieved after the defeat of the Christian Germanic Kingdoms. Between the start and end of the 13th century the borders of the present day Portugal were established.

Portugal reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries where it was economically, politically and geographically a great country and included lands in Africa, South America and Asia.

The Iberian union of almost 2 centuries was ended by the war between Portugal and Spain and ended the great kingdom of Portugal forever. This war called Portuguese Restoration War was fought in the 17th century.

By the end of the 19th century Portugal had lost all its overseas territories after fighting the Portuguese Colonial War. The last land was Macau which was given to China. The country is developed despite being at war for more than ten centuries and is prospering economically. The development is not in terms of GDP but in terms of Human Development Index and it ranks amongst the top 20 countries of the world when it comes to maintaining the quality of life.
