Honolulu is the capital city of the state of Hawaii as well as the most populous of all the states of the United States of America. For some people the entire island called Oahu is referred to as Honolulu. However usually Honolulu includes the state along with the area off shore. In the native tongue Honolulu translates as sheltered bay also called as a place of shelter. The city of Honolulu is situated at the coast in the south eastern part of Hawaiian island of Oahu and also includes the county. The calculated population of the city is approximately 371,657 according to recordings made in the year 2000. Honolulu is the only city in the state of Hawaii while the rest of the areas are governed as counties. The island of Oahu spread on an area of more than a thousand square miles of which approximately 600 square miles or 1,600 square kilometers is called the county and the city of Honolulu.
The city is one of the most visited parts of the state and famous for its festive summer nights. The natives of the island are ancient and this area was one of the first to be inhabited by the Polynesian migrants who landed on the archipelago. The evidence of settlements dates back to as early as the twelfth century. The present day downtown area of Honolulu was at one point and time the court of the emperor called Kamehameha I. it remained so till until the beginning of the nineteenth century.
There are many events hosted on the lands of Honolulu including land and sea festivals. These are major attractions for the natives as well as the foreigners and earns most of the revenue of the city as well as the state. The area of Honolulu is densely populated and the climate of the region goes very high in summers. However the beaches hold a special attraction for the tourists all year round.
