Michigan is one of the states of the United States of America and is located in the east north central part of the United States. The name of the state comes from the Lake Michigan, which itself is named after the French version of the Ojibwe word mishigami. This term means a large lake, or large water. Michigan is a Midwestern state of the country.
There are five lakes which together form the Great Lakes, and four of them surround the state of Michigan, as well as Lake Saint Clair. This geographical feature gives Michigan the status of having a freshwater shoreline which is the longest in the world. With respect to the number of registered recreational boats present, the state of Michigan ranked third among all the other states of the country. California and Florida ranked first and second respectively. Michigan is surrounded by the Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan from the east to the west.
There are two peninsulas in Michigan, and this is the only state which has two peninsulas. They are the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and the Upper Peninsula. They are separated from each other by the Straits of Mackinac. This is a channel which has a width of five miles, and connects the Lake Michigan to the Lake Huron. The Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula are linked by a bridge called the Mackinac Bridge, which ahs a length of five miles. This bridge has the status of being ranked third with respect to length among all the suspension bridges of the world which connect anchorages.
The climate of Michigan is classified as being a humid continental climate. But there are two different regions in the state. One region has a warmer climate as compared to the other, and the weather of the summer season in this region is hot, and the weather in the winter season is cold. The other region has shorter summers but colder and longer winters.
