Salem is the capital city of the United States of America and is situated in the state of Oregon. The city lies in the Marion County and is situated in the middle of the Willamette Valley and happens to be one of the most densely populated areas in the state. It was discovered in the year 1842 and has a total population of 152,290 with a population density of 2,994.0/sq miles or 1,156.1/km². The city is situated at an elevation of 46.7 m. the city lies in the middle of the Marion and Polk County. The Metropolitan Area of the city is called Salem Metropolitan (MSA) area and has a population of 385,000. It ranks on number two amongst the large urban areas of the state.
The area was first inhabited by the Native Americans called Kalapuyans. The area was called Chemeketa and is translated into English as meeting or resting place. The place was renamed Chemeketa when the Methodists moved into the area and it was also called Mill by its approximation to the Mill Creek.
After an institute was established it was recognized for that and after it was dissolved and the town of Salem was established on the spot. The name of the city is derived from the Arabic word Salam and the Hebrew word Shalom which is translated into peace.
There is an entire building in the city dedicated to the various names the city has been called with and is known as The Vern Miller Civic Center. The center houses the library as well as city offices.
There is farming communities scattered all over the area of the city and is the major raw food processing area of the USA. The economy of the state is dependent on cellular phone companies as well as many Food incorporations. There is also the Grand Ronde’s Spirit Mountain Casino which is another of Salem’s attraction.
