The state of Rhode Island is one of the states of the United States of America, and is located in the New England region of the country. The official name of the state is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. With respect to land area, the state is the smallest among all the other states of the United States.
Even though the commonly used name of the state is Rhode Island, a major part of the state lies on the mainland of North America. it is actually Aquidneck Island which is officially known as Rhode Island, while the mainland is known as Providence Plantations. The towns of Portsmouth and Middletown, as well as the city of Newport, are what constitute the Aquidneck Island nowadays.
Initially, there were thirteen colonies who declared that they independent from the rule of Great Britain, and the state of Rhode Island was one of them. Therefore, it was seen that the state was constantly independent throughout history. The last state which ratified the Constitution of the United States of America was the state of Rhode Island.
One of the nicknames which have been given to the state is Little Rhody. This nickname is commonly used, even though the official nickname of Rhode Island is the Ocean State. The reason for this is that around one tenth of the area of the inland is covered with salt water. And anywhere you are in the state, the water is so close you can reach the edge of the water after driving only for a mere thirty minutes.
The climate of Rhode Island can be classified as being a humid continental climate. The weather in the summers is hot and there is a lot of rain. On the other hand in the winter season the weather is cold and there is snow as well.
