Tennessee is one of the states of the Southern part of United States of America and was accepted in the union in the year 1796 and was the 16th member state to have abridged to the constitution of the United States of America. The largest city of the state of Tennessee is Memphis while the capital city happens to be Nashville. The total area occupied by the state of Tennessee is approximately 42,169 sq miles or 109,247 km² and it ranks on number 36 amongst all the states of the United States of America in terms of area. The percentage composition of water in the area is about 2.2%. The total population of the state is recorded as 5,689,283 with a density of 138.0/sq miles. The state ranks on number 17 and number 19 in terms of population size and density respectively. It was the 16th state to be admitted to the union in the year 1796 on the 1st of June.

Tennessee forms the border with eight states of the United States of America in all directions. Kentucky and Virginia are situated to the north while the state of North Carolina lies to the east of the state of Tennessee. On the south part it borders with Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi while the states of Arkansas and Missouri are situated towards the western part. Tennessee and Missouri are the two states of the United States of America with the maximum number of neighboring states. The tallest area of the state measures about 6,643 feet or 2,025 meter and is on Clingmans Dome. The lowest point of the state of Tennessee is the Mississippi River which lies on the state line of Mississippi. Tennessee holds the record of a state with the maximum number of caves amongst the states of the United States of America with registered 8,350 caves.
