Memphis is one of the cities of the state of Tennessee which is situated in the United States of America. The city is located in the south western part of the state, and has the status of being the county seat of Shelby County. Memphis is positioned due south of the opening of the Wolf River and on the fourth Chickasaw Bluff towering over the Mississippi River. According to figures collected in the year 2006, the city of Memphis was home to more than six hundred and seventy thousand people. As per these figures, the city ranks first among all the cities of the state of Tennessee, second among all the cities of the south eastern region of the United States, coming after only the city of Jacksonville of the state of Florida, and seventeenth among all the cities of the United States. These rankings are with respect to the level of population. The people who love in Memphis are known as Memphians, and the region in which population is situated is known as the Mid South.
The greater metropolitan area of Memphis is home to more than one million two hundred and sixty thousand people, and this area also consists of the Arkansas and Mississippi counties. The metropolitan area of Memphis ranks second among all the metropolitan areas of the state with respect to the level of population, and only comes after Nashville.
The climate of Memphis can be classified as being a humid subtropical climate. The city has four different seasons. In the month of July the levels of humidity are considerably high, and the reason for this is the moisture which seeps in from the Gulf of Mexico. In the summer seasons afternoon thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence. Bu the duration for these is not so long, they only last for less than hour.
