Wisconsin also called in French as Ouisconsin is one of the states in the central part of the United States of America. The state is located around two Great Lakes of the US and named after the Wisconsin River. It is one of the 50 states of the United States of America. The capital city of the state is Madison while the largset city is called Milwaukee.The name is said to have come from the language of Ojibwe and means muskrat-lodge place or little muskrat place. The Ojibwe word for it is Wiishkoonsing aslo called as Wazhashkoonsing. Other historical references of the name are Great Rock or Gathering of the Waters. The natives of the state are called Wisconsinite and the state has been inhabited since many centuries. The total area occupied by the state of Wisconsin is about 65,498 sq miles or 169,790 km². Amongst all the states of the United States of America Wisconsin lies on number 23 in terms of area. The total population of the state is about 5,556,506 with a population density of 98.8/sq miles. The largest metropolitan area of the state is called Greater Milwaukee. The state of Wisconsin was admitted to the United States Union on May 29, 1848 and was the 30th state to be accepted. Farming had a major role to play in the state’s economy in the early days along with mining as well as lumbering. With the advent of the 20th century tourism emerged as a prominent means of earning money and gained popularity swiftly. Industries were mostly concentrated in and around the area of Milwaukee and expanded later to the rest of the state of Wisconsin. Many successful large industries including medicine and service industries are not functioning effectively in the state of Wisconsin and contributed to the revenue generated by the state. The shape of the city as Glaciations of the last ice age has also contributed to its popularity.
